The World Fireworks Championship

The world's largest and most prestigious fireworks competition

The World Fireworks Championship brings together the finest pyrotechnic companies on the planet to compete in a series of spectacular pyro-musical displays staged across three consecutive weekends in an iconic host city.

Each team is given the freedom to design, choreograph and fire their own display — perfectly synchronised to music of their choosing — and judged by an expert international panel. The result is a festival of light, sound and creative ambition unlike anything else in live entertainment.

Open to all and free of charge to attend, the Championship draws enormous crowds and generates significant local, national and international media coverage throughout the competition period.

6 Elite Competitors
3 Competition Weekends
6 Individual Displays
60,000+ Fireworks Per Event

The Competition

Six of the world's foremost fireworks companies are invited to compete. Each fires one display per weekend over three successive weekends, with two companies performing on each of the six competition nights.

Every display is an original pyro-musical composition: a precisely choreographed sequence of fireworks synchronised to a bespoke musical score, designed to showcase each company's creative signature and technical mastery.

A panel of internationally respected judges scores each performance on artistic merit, technical execution, originality and synchronisation. The winner is announced at the conclusion of the final weekend.

The Setting

The Championship is staged in a landmark location within its host city — an open-air venue that allows the largest possible public audience to attend free of charge. The scale of the audience is part of the event's character: the Championship is emphatically a civic celebration, not a ticketed spectacle.

The 2010 Championship took place at Al Qurum Natural Park in the heart of Muscat, Oman — 125 acres of palm trees and fountains that provided a breathtaking backdrop for the displays. The venue, free admission, and the national prestige of the occasion combined to attract 750,000 spectators across six competition nights.

The world's finest pyrotechnic companies

Invitation to compete is a mark of the highest international standing. The 2010 Championship brought together six companies whose combined history in pyrotechnics spans more than 500 years.

An itinerant world-class event

The Championship's vision is to become one of the world's great itinerant arts and entertainment events — moving to a new host city every edition, bringing a combination of world-leading pyro-musical performance and the best in large-scale light art to outstanding locations around the globe.

In the same tradition as the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup, the Championship is designed to leave a lasting legacy in every city it visits: an assertion of civic pride, a catalyst for tourism, and an unforgettable shared experience for hundreds of thousands of people.

The Championship is now seeking its next host. Find out how your city can write its name in lights.

What is a pyro-musical display?

A pyro-musical is a fireworks display in which every shell, comet, mine and set-piece is choreographed precisely to music. The effect is something close to a symphony — except the instruments are pyrotechnic devices timed to the millisecond, and the concert hall is the open sky.

The top pyro-musical companies design their displays around original or re-arranged scores that complement the colour, timing and rhythm of the fireworks. The best performances create a seamless fusion of sensory experience that audiences describe as overwhelming.

"Each individual display is carefully choreographed to music and guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend."

The Championship's judging criteria reward not just technical excellence — the precision and quality of the fireworks themselves — but the artistic integration of sound and light, and the emotional impact of the display as a whole.
