The 2010 Championship — Muscat, Oman

A new era in live entertainment

The inaugural World Fireworks Championship took place over three weekends in December 2010 at Al Qurum Natural Park in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. Staged as part of Oman's 40th National Day celebrations, the event was organised by the High Committee for National Day, Al Taseheel Al Wataniya and World Fireworks Championship Limited.

Six of the world's most celebrated fireworks companies competed across six nights of displays, each producing an original pyro-musical performance choreographed to music. The Championship attracted 750,000 spectators from Oman and around the world — one of the largest attendances ever recorded for a fireworks competition.

The competition was won by Lacroix-Ruggieri of France, who became the inaugural World Fireworks Champions. Their display was judged the most outstanding combination of technical mastery, artistic ambition and pyro-musical choreography.

Oman is situated on the south-east coast of the Arabian Peninsula — a country of ancient history, dramatic landscape and warm hospitality. Its capital, Muscat, is a modern, cosmopolitan city with a strong tradition of arts and cultural events.

The Championship venue, Al Qurum Natural Park, sits in the heart of the city: 125 acres of palm trees, fountains and open parkland that provided a natural amphitheatre for the displays, with unobstructed sightlines for tens of thousands of spectators per night.

The Championship coincided with Oman's 40th National Day celebrations — the country's most significant annual event. The connection gave the Championship a special national significance and ensured wide participation from Omani citizens and expatriate residents alike.

Making It Happen

Staging an event of this scale requires months of logistics, planning and preparation — from shipping thousands of shells across continents to choreographing six world-class displays over three weekends.

The 2010 Championship was delivered through a partnership between the High Committee for National Day, Al Taseheel Al Wataniya, and World Fireworks Championship Limited, the Championship's founding organiser. The Championship's headline sponsors were Bank Muscat, Nawras telecommunications, and HSBC.

Each of the six competing companies shipped their pyrotechnic equipment to Oman months in advance, working with the production team on firing sites, safety cordons, and the technical infrastructure that allowed 60,000+ fireworks to be fired safely across six nights. The result was an event of a scale and quality that had never before been achieved in competitive pyrotechnics.
